What is the NDIS and How it Works

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a transformative Australian program designed to support over 500,000 Australians with disabilities , including about 80,000 children with developmental delays. Its primary goal is to enhance independence, improve quality of life, and promote community and workplace participation.

  • It focuses on providing individualized support and fostering community engagement, benefiting children and adults alike.

  • The scheme is designed to improve independence, enhance quality of life, and support community participation.

NDIS dedication to enhancing the experience for applicants, participants, and their families and carers is clearly articulated in NDIS Participant Service Charter, updated to reflect legislative changes as of 2022. This commitment is structured around a set of core principles:

  • Transparency: Ensuring information and decisions are easily accessible and understandable.

  • Responsiveness: Tailoring our responses to meet the unique needs and circumstances of each individual.

  • Respect: Acknowledging and valuing the personal experiences of participants, recognizing them as experts in their own lives.

  • Empowerment: Facilitating easy access to information and support, empowering participants to lead their lives with the backing of the NDIS.

  • Connectedness: Assisting participants in accessing the necessary services and supports.

The Participant Service Charter also tells you how you can contact NDIS, make a complaint, or provide feedback, and your rights if you do not agree with a decision they’ve made.

Participant Service Guarantee

The Participant Service Charter includes timeframes for our processes and decisions – set out in the legislated Participant Service Guarantee and draft Participant Service Guarantee Rules.

How the NDIS works

The NDIS is Australia’s first national Scheme for people with disability. It provides funding directly to individuals.
